Vorlesungen Uber Geschichte der Mathematik: Der Band, welcher seinen Lesern hiermit übergeben wird, ist aus den Vorlesungen über Geschichte der Mathematik herausgewachsen, welche ich seit einer Reihe von Jahren an der Heidelberger Hochschule einzubürgern mich bemüht habe. Frühere Zuhörer werden ganz besonders die Berechtigung des Wortes anerkennen, dieser Band sei aus jenen Vorlesungen herausgewachsen. Wie der Stoff von Halbjahr zu Halbjahr sich häufte, ohne dass es thunlieh schien die jetzt schon über anderthalb Jahre sieh erstreckende Frist oder die auf zwei wöchentliche Stunden beschränkte Vorlesungszeit zu vergrössern, zeigte sich zwingend und zwingender das Bedürfniss, bald diese bald jene Abtheilung mit Vorliebe zu behandeln, oder bis zu einem gewissen Grade zu vernachlässigen. So entstand nach und nach der Wunsch, für die rascher durchlaufenen Wegstücke einen Ersatz in Gestalt eines Buches bieten zu können. Zugleich drängte sich aber die Ueberzeugung mir auf, dass ein solches Buch erst geschrieben werden müsse, dass es auch einem anderen viel bedeutsameren Bedürfnisse als dem verhältnissmässig weniger Zuhörer abzuhelfen bestimmt sei.Ich habe in verschiedenen Schriften, welche ich seit den 25 Jahren, in welchen ich historisch-mathematisch thätig war, durch den Druck veröffentlicht habe, mit Vergnügen hervorheben können, dass der Kreis der Mitarbeiter auf diesem Gebiete sich mehr und mehr erweitre. Entdeckung folgte auf Entdeckung und schuf ganz neue Grundlagen, von welchen die Verfasser der älteren Geschichtswerke der Mathematik, vor Allen Montucla, dessen grosses Werk, wenn auch selbstverständlich vielfach fehlerhaft, noch unübertroffen ist, keine Ahnung hatten. In dem Maasse, in welchem das Wissen zunahm, nahm auch die Schwierigkeit zu das Wissen sich anzueignen. Nicht Jeder ist in der Lage, die vielen kleineren Einzelarbeiten sieh verschaffen zu können, in welchen das Neue enthalten ist, nicht Jeder kennt sie insgesammt auch nur dem Titel nach. Ebook.
