Not illustrated. 1841 Excerpt: . . . clasping the stem with a hairy membranous appendage on each side, lower ones 5-lobed, lobes unequally crenato-dentate, crenatures obtuse and tipped with a pale callous tubercle, lobes and crenatures of the upper leaves narrower and more acuminate; uppermost leaves nearly sessile, simple, lanceolate, entire. Peduncles solitary, opposite and about equal to the leaf, hairy or glabrous, bearing a simple minute flower. Sepals ovate, obtuse, membranous and recurved at the edges, 3-ribbed, hairy externally, erect on th6 first expansion of the flower, but soon becoming reflexed as the carpels increase in size. Petals seldom all perfected, elliptical, obtuse, with a long claw, thick, deep shining yellow with a pale watery mark above the claw, 5-ribbed, equal to the sepals. Nectary an obtuse truncated thick scale. Seed roundish, lenticular, compressed, very minutely tuberculated, armed with incurved prickles arising from larger scattered tubercles, surrounded with a smooth sharp margin and crowned with a broad recurved smooth beak. 17.
