After the revolution 1867-1868 the Buddhist religion was disestablished and disendowed, ancient art in Japan thereby received a crushing below from which it can now never quite recover. Being deprived of their revenues many fine Temples have already fallen into absolute ruin, and others are in a bad state of decay from want of care and necessary repairs. The government has at last awakened to the fact that if assistance is not soon rendered, very little of the fine museums of most that is best of the fine arts of old Japan will soon have vanished. We are glad to know that before the close of the last session parliament had voted a grant for the repair of the Buddhist Temples, and we may now hope to see them kept in the same way as has been the case with the less interesting, --because devoid of all ornament---Shinto Shrines. The Temples and Shrines are now under the care and supervision of a special governmental department called The Naimusho or Home Office. May the day be not far distant when the devotions of the nation shall be directed to the only one true living all-seeing all-knowing all-loving God--the God of the Christians, instead of to the senseless lifeless images of wood, stone and metal the base works of idolatrous, men. In viewing the Temples and Shrines it will be noticed that with the exception of the Elephant, when any two Birds, Beasts Fishes, or Reptiles whether fabulous or not are represented facing each other, one-usually that on the right--has its mouth open, while that of the other one is closed, typifying the active and passive. Tombs formed of a cube supporting a sphere which bears a pyramid having a shallow square cup with four crescent edges and tilted corners on it, and in the cup a pyriform body poised with the . . .
