Readers may perhaps be surprised at such a chase being introduced into the story, but indisputable records inform us that England was about that period so much infested with wolves, that in the next reign, that of Edward I., a royal mandate was issued to Peter Corbett, that in all forests, parks, and other places in the counties of Wor oester, Gloucester, Hereford, Salop, and Stafford, in which he might find wolves, he was to hunt the same with men, dogs, and engines, to destroy them.
