Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from Extracts From the Diary and Autobiography of the Rev. James Clegg, Nonconformist Minister and Doctor of Medicine, A. D. 1679 to 1755 The ms. From which the following extracts are taken is contained in a Folio book of 265 pages, written on rough paper, and with ink which in some places has faded almost to obscurity. The leaves of the book have been reverently repaired by its present possessor, but in some places even his care has failed to recover certain entries which have become undecipherable. The writing is small and cramped, and each page is divided into two columns, each column containing about 800 words, so the length of the whole is considerable. The entries seem to have been made almost daily, except when the worthy Doctor was on his travels, when they were written up immediately after his return. This ms. Is the record of a life a carefully kept Diary written up with scrupulous care and honesty, wherein are set down the most trivial details and the most serious occurrences, together with expressions of hope and fear, personal confessions, and words of supplicatio n and thanksgiving - the varied outcome of an educated, active and pious mind. The whole, as might be expected, is intensely devout, filled to over?owing with the spirit of true religion. In this daily record the writer stands vividly revealed; he hides nothing, he lays his soul bare; not only are his actions detailed, but his motives, his thoughts, his temptations and his sins are all displayed. It is an intensely human document. Who and what sort of man the Revd. Dr. Clegg was will be sufficiently revealed in the extracts themselves. What is here printed is but an infinitesimal amount of the whole Diary; the greater part of the entries are of a nature wholely uninteresting to the general reader, and consist principally of daily visits to the sick, the poor and the needy, the fatherless and widow; long details of illnesses told in the plainest language, not suitable to the ideas of modern delicacy; details of sermons preached, of the common incidents of farm life and ministerial business, of numerous funerals, with the inevitable sermons setting forth to his or her weeping friends the virtues of the departed; quarrels amongst neighbours arranged, in which he ever appeared as a peacemaker; family incidents, a meteorological journal, and a general gazette of all the births, marriages and deaths in the village where he lived and for miles around.
