Excerpt from Bible Course: Outline and Notes; New Testament 2. The Significance of the Name. The term Testament is a translation of the Greek word diatheca. The word, however, is more, often translated covenant. In the Revised Version it is uniformly so translated except in Heb. 9:16, 17.The word covenant "is always used when the word designates the Covenants made with the Patriarchs, or the Covenant entered into by Israel at Sinai; and as Fairbairn remarks, 'it had been better, in the words connected with the Lord's Supper, to have retained the common rendering, and read - This is the New Covenant in my blood; - since all should then have readily perceived that the Lord pointed to the Divine Covenant, in its new and better form, as contradistinguished from that which had been brought in by Moses, and which had now reached the end of its appointment.'" - Armstrong, pp. 27-28. 3. It expresses the relation between the Old Testament and New Testament. "It is called "The New Testament,' in contradistinction to the 'Old Testament': not as if the one contained only the covenant of works, and the other the new covenant of grace, but because the New Testament gives an account of the abrogation of the old dispensation, and of the introduction of a new and better dispensation." - Scott, p.3.
