Having examined a copy of the work, Mr. Longfellow sent for me one day and suggested the preparation of a work which should comprise in its subject-matter very full biographical data relative to our elder American poets. The suggestion was duly considered, and the project seemed to me to be at that time perfectly feasible. Upon making known to Mr. Longfellow my decision, it was at once agreed that we should begin with his own literary life and works. At intervals he gave me much of his valuable time, and I very carefully gathered together from his lips my memoranda.
