Provost, the Trustees and Medical Faculty of the University of Pennsylvania; On the 6th Day of June, 1799 In thus deviating, from a long eftablifhed cul´tom, I do not intend to deny my obliga tions to authors who have treated on the fubjeél about to be confidered - The fails upon which many of the following obfervations are founded, are contained in the writings of Morgagni, Bonetus, Schenkius, Monroe, Boerhaave and Hoff man - I am not fenfible of having taken any thing for granted, which experiment and the common Obfervations of mankind have not amply illultrated - Without prepoll´ellion in favour of any parti calar opinion, and With a predilection to the autho rity of none, I have read attentively the works of thofe, who have written profefiedly on my fubjeét.
