Excerpt from A Remonstrance, Addressed to the Protestant Association: Containing, Observations on Their Conduct, and on Their Appeal to the People of Great Britain Gentlemen, It is probable, that at the first fight or hearing of this Address, you will imagine it is written by some zealous catholic; or perhaps, by some ministerial hireling; by some sturdy beggar of the church; a Reverend Dean perhaps; or, by some latitudinarian infidel, who professes a love of liberty, through a shameful indifferency to, or hatred of, all religion: but Gentlemen, be not too hasty in judging; which, I think, is a fault, your Appeal justifies me in supposing, you are too prone to be guilty of. It is not the design of this Address to "advance Popery, to ruin the state, to destroy the church, to sacrifice the nation to a double slavery, and prepare chains both for the bodies and minds of Britons". Indeed it is my serious opinion, that Popery is one of the most shameful superstitions, which have ever been propagated to the disgrace of human nature, and the dishonour of the Christian name.
