I am aware that I have not given to this chapter all the extension and development which it deserves, and this is my reason: Utility being my main object, I have taken up only those diseases of the hepatic gland which we observe in our country, leaving one side all that important group of liver diseases which are so prevalent in tropical countries, and which the reader will find described at great length in leading text-books devoted to this subject. I may venture to hope that physicians in the United States will accord to this volume the same welcome and the same indulgence which have been extended to my previous publications.
