Die Korrespondenz enthält umfassende Informationen über die Forschungspraxis der 'Goethephilologie zwischen Dilettantismus und Universität'. Die Einleitung bietet den wissenschafts- und kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext zur Korrespondenz und gibt Informationen zur Verbindung der Goetheforscher Gustav von Loeper und Herman Grimm, zu Loepers Forschung, die sich teilweise an der akademischen Forschung Wilhelm Scherers orientierte, und dazu, welchen Anteil Gustav von Loeper als Berater der Großherzogin Sophie von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach daran hatte, dass in Weimar das Goethe-Archiv errichtet, die Goethe-Gesellschaft gegründet und die Weimarer Goethe-Ausgabe realisiert wurde.
