It was also thought best to make the notes more copious than would seem to be warranted in a school-edition designed for advanced reading, in order' that the present volume might serve the English-speaking student Of German as a proper introduction to the large list of modern novels, headed by Scheffel's Ekkehard, ' which revive or imitate the speech of former times. The main purpose of the notes is to explain all words and phrases not to be found in an ordinary german-english Lexicon and such as would easily be misunderstood in their signification.
