Excerpt: ...signiferumque, maluisti dici. graece ergo praetor Athenis, id quod maluisti te, cum ad me accedis, saluto; lXn'fK,' inquam, 'Tite!'; lictores turma omnis cohorsque 'x(ûpf Tite!'--hinc hostis mi Albucius, hinc inimicus. Cíe. De Fin. I. 3. Titus Albucius is described by Cicero (Brut 35) as 'doctus Graecis vel potius paene Graecus... fuit autem Athenis adulescens, perfectus Epicureus evaserat.' Q. Mucius Seaevola, on his way to his province as propraetor in Asia, R.c. iai, meets Albucius at Athens, and in recognition of his Greek tastes salutes him 'Graeco more '; his whole retinue taking up and carrying on the joke. И. (A further caricature of the style of Albucius.) Quam lepide Atf«r compostae ut tesserulae omnes arte pavimento atque emblemate vermiculato! Сю. Or. 44. i49. Cicero, in this passage, deprecates over-nicety in the combination of words: 'nam esset cum infinitus tum puerilis labor, quod apud Lucilium scite exagitat in Albucio Scaevola.' iesserulae, the small cubes forming a 'tessellated pavement.' arte, 'skilfully.' emblemate vermiculato, 'intertwined mosaic work.' iußriiia is anything 'inlaid.' vermiculatus is that which runs in twining, 'wriggling,' patterns, as distinct from geometrical lines. III. (Scaevola refers to his son-in-law, L. Licinius Crassus, the most famous Soman orator before Cicero's time.) Crassum habeo generum, ne rhetoricoteros tu seis! Cíe. De Orat. 3. 43. rhetoricoteros, i.e. p"ijTopiK¿irtpos. Book III. See Porphyr, ad Hor.
