Nemtsov is the first in that he made rhythm per se the subject matter of his prose. A flow of associations, a choice of words, and meaning itself - when discernible - all are subject to the Rule of Rhythm. Perhaps, only Alexander Blok has been as willing to be subjugated by the powers of rhythm, as is Nemtsov in his last book. Oleg Nemtsov exploits images of antiquity, early Renaissance and the troubled modernity with Joycean ease. Multiple cultural allusions render this book speckled and elusive, beautiful and repugnant - just like a snake slithering away.
