Until this book, nobody wrote like this in Russian. Rhythmic prose by Oleg Nemtsov conveys ardor and odium immediately - that is, not quickly but directly. The author does not deign to stop or even slow down for the reader's sake. The book, fitting to the title, is unforgiving. Author, you see, acknowledges readily that he cares for only two kinds of prospective readers - young beautiful Russian girls or true lovers of the Russian literature. (Not and - or.) While the former are aplenty, they have better things to do, and the latter are nearly extinct. In a landscape so barren, the author has little reason to worry about his readers. Instead, Oleg Nemtsov worries about rhythm. Russian literature knows rhythmic prose by Nikolay Gogol and Andrey Belyj, and by some subsequent lesser writers. Nemtsov is the first in that he made rhythm per se the subject matter of his prose. A flow of associations, a choice of words, and meaning itself - when discernible - all are subject to the Rule of Rhythm. Perhaps, only Alexander Blok has been as willing to be subjugated by the powers of rhythm, as is Nemtsov in his last book. Oleg Nemtsov exploits images of antiquity, early Renaissance and the troubled modernity with Joycean ease. Multiple cultural allusions render this book speckled and elusive, beautiful and repugnant - just like a snake slithering away.
