He need not disclaim any pretension to shape the discussion upon which they were about to enter. He was their host, but nothing more. It had seemed to him expedient at this crisis, of which they all recognised the gravity, to gather together representatives of the various schools of religious thought in their communion. They had accepted his invitation, and he thought they had done wisely. If they could arrive at any common principle of action in defending the National Church, of which they were all, in spite of wide differences of theological opinion, authorised pastors and official advocates, their discussion would not be barren. Their enemies were united, but they were not. Was it possible to remove this initial difficulty? This was the question which he submitted to their wisdom.
