These are to be sought for elsewhere; if he has served his fellow-citizens in high office, first in the records of his Guild and then of the Corporation. But to bear their full mean ing these materials must be illustrated by placing on the text a statement of the circumstances (civic or political) which give to his actions their due weight and importance. In this manner the memoir becomes a Chapter in the history of the Guild or Corporation, and where, as in this instance, the times are those of crises - of London - each phase commanding a wider interest than that of mere personal act or character.
