Excerpt from The Basilica; Or, Palatial Hall of Justice and Sacred Temple, Its Nature, Origin, and Purport: And a Description and History of the Basilican Church of Brixworth, With Lithographic Illustrations Our Architectural Society desiring a lecture on the subject, and I still declining to treat it till I could do so more fully and certainly, the Rev. G. Ayliff Poole came over for the purpose, to whom I pointed out all that had been brought to light under my directions; and he being a profound Archaeologist, and unprejudiced by the opinions of others, produced, with sound judgment, an excel lent essay, more extensive than the epitome that I had sent for the Cottager's Monthly Visitor, but with some misconceptions, that I foresaw could only be settled by further investigations. This essay is inserted in our Architectural Journal. At the conclusion of his lecture, delivered to a large and intelligent annual meeting at the George Hotel, Northampton, I added, impromptu, a m'vd coce ac count of the Basilica, as I knew that the purport of the different parts of the church then described would not be clearly seen and fully appreciated Without it.
