Malgré son harmonie plutôt conventionnelle, cette musique aux sonorités délicates et à la mélodie tout en finesse annonce déjà le style tardif de Debussy. Bien que la suite ne fût publiée qu'en 1905, l'inscription de l'année de composition («1890») faite par Debussy dans les épreuves en placard de la gravure indique qu'il s'agit bel et bien d'une œuvre plus ancienne.
