The immediate success of Alan Morris's first book BLOODY APRIL established him as a front rank historian of British military aviation, and in FIRST OF THE MANY he again combines graphic writing with thorough research. In 1918 a handful of young British aviators, flying unsafe machines round-the-clock and harried by Germany's home defences, originated regular long-range bombing and thus became the forerunners of R.A.F. Bomber Command, the U.S. Strategic Air Force and N.A.T.O.'s H-bombers. Their losses rose to 75%; their survivors pioneered Britain's airmail services. The story of Independent Force, told here for the first time, abounds in amazing incident-the pilot who deliberately rammed a steel balloon-net; the dead gunner who brought down his own aircraft; observers wing-walking to clear bombs and ice at 20,000 feet. Alan Morris also unearthed squadron and Intelligence records which disclose how and why the I.F. cracked morale in Germany. This evidence is presented against the political, industrial and social background, and the author shows that if the lesson of I.F. operations had been _properly learned in the 1930s R.A.F.
