The author insists that this is not `a book about Italy' but simply - as the title indicates - an account of an Italian journey, which began and ended in Venice and which in between took in a good deal of Northern Italy. It was a journey made what is nowadays considered to be the `hard way' - that is to say by boat and train and motor-coach. Miss Mannin journeyed from Venice to Florence by coach, which allowed time for the Giotto murals at Padua, and the amazing Teatro Olimpico at the Palladian city of Vicenza. From Florence she visited Assisi and Perugia, San Gimignano and Siena; she visited Byron's Ravenna, and the `Communist' Bologna, and spent some days in Verona, `Venice without the water' and `loveliest of cities'. Back in Venice she made vaporetti trips to the islands of the lagoons - Burano of the lace, Murano of the glass, and Torcello of the Byzantine mosaics. She drank her midday Camparis at snack-bars and dined at the Gritti - though the latter, she seems anxious to make clear, was not her fault, it having been `laid on' for her, and was anyhow `an experience'. For the intending visitor to northern Italy this book will be a useful guide; for those who `know Italy' it will have, perhaps, a deja vu interest; and for the purely armchair traveller it should provide an entertaining account of what the author herself would call a `mooch' through beautiful and interesting places. For the fact that it is a highly personalized account neither the author nor the publishers apologize. It is precisely that. .
