London: Constable, 1972. 212 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). B&w reproductions. "Marevna, a charming, beautiful, and high-spirited art student, arrived in Paris at the end of the Belle Epoque in 1912. She settled in a studio in Montparnasse. Soon she made a dramatic entry into the circle of emigre painters and was introduced to the teeming quarter of La Ruche and 'the young geniuses in their bee-hive'. She became the first woman to discover Cubism and was a friend of its chief protagonists, including Soutine and Diego Rivera. Their favourite haunt was the cafe Rotonde where those whose names are now world famous - Picasso, Braque, Leger, Max Jacob, Modigliani, Chagall, Kremegne, the poets Ehrenburg and Cocteau, Charlie Chaplin and the writers and intellectuals of Montparnasse - used to meet to discuss the New Art. She gives a full and witty acount of those in her circle over the period 1912-21: there are sketches of Modigliani, engaging but drunk, revealing himself as a naked Renaissance youth; details of how they lived, of the cafes whre they obtained credit in exchange for paintings - and the outlets, patrons and agents for their paintings during the war years when the anti-Bolshevik and anti-Cubist feeling was high. The whole nostalgia of an era is evoked here in stringent, realistic detail: the intoxication and vortex of discussion over the New Art, the Diaghilev ballet, Stravinsky's 'Sacre du Printemps', Russian balls, the exuberant drinking bouts. After describing her passionate and turbulent association with the fiery Mexican painter, Diego Rivera - who later left her with a young daughter, Marika, to continue his career in Mexico - Marevna turns our attention to Soutine whom she knew as a friend and with whom she felt a deep affinity, sharing as they did the same Russo-Jewish background. Misunderstood and misshapen, Soutine emerged from that period as one of the greatest painters; and here Marevna contributes an entirely original appreciation of his work in her analysis, using structural diagrams to explain its development and construction." Slight browning to pages and edges of text block, minor soiling on fore-edge of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine color, very light rubbing.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good-.
