It covers four generations of life in Clevedon and neighbouring Ness Valley and Otau, Manukau City. Book One: The Helenslee Diary and A Collection of Memories Part One The Helenslee Diary: Frae the Broomielaw to the Waitemata This is the thirteen-week journey of Thomas Murray as he leaves the Broomielaw Quay in Glasgow, Scotland, with his family aboard the immigrant ship the Helenslee bound for the Waitemata harbour. His story of the voyage is told with poignancy and colour, detailing the day to day goings on of life and death on their way to New Zealand. Part Two A Collection of Memories This is a collection of clear and vivid memories shared by Thomas grandson, Tom Murray, of growing up as his parents and grandparents created a home and farm on land they first had to claim from the bush. When Tom was just eighteen, his father died after a long illness. Left with three children, his mother kept the farm and with the support of extended family the McKenzies and the Murrays, they not only survived but prospered. Then in 1915 Tom went to fight in the Middle East in World War One. His account of fighting in the desert is as personal as any you are likely to read. We come face to face with soldiers of the Turkish army; we are there with the horses and men who are dying of thirst and yet somehow, stoically, they push themselves almost beyond the limits of endurance to survive injuries and illness and to come home, barely alive , at the end of the war.
