Arthur Gamble's RAF memoirs uniquely cover two very different theatres of World War II. As an eighteen-year-old, in a 'reserved occupation', he volunteered to join the RAF, requesting to become an air gunner - instead they trained him to be a fitter!! He soon found himself on a troopship bound for Singapore shortly before the Japanese invaded. He quickly discovered that there were very few fighter planes for him to work on, and spent his time being moved around Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, in almost as much danger from the ineptitude and ignorance of his own High Command than from the daily strafing by the Japanese Air Force. Totally demoralised, a slice of good fortune enabled him to see a printed order asking for men to train as aircrew. He jumped at the chance, and returned to England to join Bomber Command. As a flight engineer, flying Lancasters with 100 Squadron, he flew day and night missions over Germany. Bomber Command sustained more fatalities than any other of the Allied Armed Forces during World War II, and the author paints a vivid picture of what it was like to fly through enemy flak to accurately bomb their targets.
