CLARK, LIMITED, EDINBURGH THE EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN I OF MEXICO From the portrait by Jean Adolphc Beauc in the National Museum of Mexico in Chapultepec Castle, Mexico, D. K By courtesy of the Government of Mexico PREFACE TN 1936, while working in the Austrian State Archives in Vienna 1 where many of the private and secret papers of the imperial family are preserved, I became aware for the first time of the existence of a considerable amount of material, both documentary and printed, relating to the last Mexican Emperor and his consort. Some of this material had previously been seen and used by Count E. C. Corti, who was the first student permitted to examine the imperial collections on the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1918. Shortly after my visit a full account of the so-called Maximilianarchiv from the pen of the collections official keeper appeared in the Inventare des Wiener ffaus-Hof-und Staatsarchiv, vol. 5, edited by the late Dr. Ludwig Bittner and published in Vienna in 1937. But this was not the only repository of source material for the lives of Maximilian and Carlota. There was the western hemisphere. I realized that it would be unwise for me to attempt to write a biography until I had been, among other places, to Washington and Mexico City. For this facility I had to wait several years. Eventually in 1942 a visit to Mexico was arranged, and I was able to return there in the followingyear. These visits enabled me to collect the necessary additional material. They were fortunately supplemented by opportunities for research in a number of libraries and public archives in the United States of America. Some idea of the extent and variety of the sources which it was necessary to examine in order to complete this work may be obtained from the bibliographical chapter in it. In 1945 it was my lot to spend the last months of my war ser vice in Austria and Italy, where I was able to revisit Vienna and also to see the neighbourhood of Trieste and Milan which all bear many memories and unmistakeable traces of Maximilian and Carlota. To the numerous individuals and institutions on both sides of the Atlantic who have helped me I wish to express my thanks for their inexhaustible kindness and patience. I am particularly indebted to the following Mexican Empire In Mexico the Government of the Republic for access to the National Archives and to the Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. George R. G. Conway for his generous advice and hospitality and for unrestricted use of his unique collection of manuscripts and printed books on Mexico preserved at Cuerna vaca Mr. Ian Walker, late H. M. Vice-Consul in Mexico City, for accompanying me to Queretaro and enabling me to cover the ground of Maximilians last campaign in the literal sense Lie. Edmundo OGorman, Mr. Vladimir Dillon and Col. J. D. W. Holmes of Mexico City, and Sr. Eduardo B. Rend6n of Cuernavaca, for allowing me to draw on their knowledge of Mexican character and history. In the United States Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., for permission to quote from Mrs. Alison Phillipss excellent translation of Count Cords Maximilian undCharlotte von Mexiko the staffs of the Library of Congress, Washington, D. C., the United States National Archives, Washington, D. C., the Library of the Univer sity Club, New York, N. Y., the New York City Public Library, and the Library of the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. In Austria the late Dr. Ludwig Bittner and the late Dr. Lothar Gross for special facilities for research in the helpful State Archives in Vienna Count E. C... Maximilian I of Mexico and his consort Charlotte of Belgium, known as Carlota were the only rulers of the second Mexican Empire. Installed by Napoleon III and a small group of Mexican Monarchists, the rule was short lived and even though Maximilian had a genuine love for Mexico and it's people and brought around liberal reforms the people of Mexico had no wish to be ruled by a foreign power and revolted. This is the fascinating story of his three year reign from documents and first hand accounts. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
