Near Fine Condition/Very Good. black end-papers; text in English, Greek And French; The Acropolis of Athens was one of the first monuments photographed in 1839, only a few months after the invention of the daguerreotype. An essential stop for travellers during the "Grand Tour" of the 19th century, the Acropolis evolved together with photography. During the same period, under the auspices of the newly established "The Archaeological Society at Athens", the first reconstitution and preservation work for the monument, already stripped by Elgin, was initiated. It continued during the 19th century and into the first half of the 20th century, until the post-war period and, specifically, the year 1959, when the visual show "Sound and Light" was first put on. In this way, the Acropolis was offered as a visual tourist show to the crowds that began to overwhelm the country. Photography, during exactly the same period, followed the same evolving path, technically and aesthetically, as that of the monument. From the few and therefore rare early photographic shots, a large professional production followed around the end of the 19th century. The first half of the 20th century witnessed the birth of modernist photography, followed by the appearance of amateur photography in the 1950'S. Since that time, the Acropolis ceased to be the epicenter of photographic interest, and contemporary photographers already viewed it with a critical eye. This book, with the help of 250 photographs, takes us through space and time to the Acropolis of Athens from the 19th to the 20th century. For the first time, since 1801 when Lord Elgin stripped the monument and took most of its statues, this book -with the help of rare photographs of the 19th century- enables on a symbolic level the visual reconstitution of the monument.
