Estratto: ... a sort of English vellum paper, of a bluish colour, and perhaps too much sized; I could not obtain impressions on it, though I took the utmost pains to procure them. This sort of paper it is extremely difficult to wet; every sheet required to be wetted separately, and when the water came in contact with it, it shrunk into innumerable wrinkles. Some similar sorts of Dutch paper present the same difficulties, for they do not easily take the colour if not wetted to a certain degree. I cannot here omit mentioning a circumstance which, if neglected, would render all the exertions of a beginner perfectly fruitless. There is a certain sort of paper used for printing, which is very fine and white, equal, but a little rough on its surface, and of a peculiar smell, partly resembling that of honey, partly that of uric acid; it bears generally the name Rupnel freres, and is of French manufacture; this paper possesses the quality of destroying the prepared surface of the stone, and consequently of entirely spoiling it. Perhaps I may succeed one day in discovering a remedy for this inconvenience, but at present I have not leisure to make the necessary experiments. This sort of paper can only therefore be used for that manner of printing, where the paper is not wetted at all. It is presumed that the singular quality of this paper arises from the chemical process of bleaching it; in fact,"all papers chemically bleached are more or less destructive to Lithography, and particularly where vitriol and muriatic acid is used for bleaching. Swiss papers,! find, are the best adapted for Lithography, being the purest or the least adulterated. A similar effect is produced by some sorts of...
