Some of the plaintiffs in error were present at that meeting during a part or the whole of the time. Others were not there at all while the meeting was being held. As it was approaching a close, a large body of police, some 180 in number, under the command of Inspector John Bonfield, came from the Desplaines street police station, situate about half a block south of Randolph street, on Desplaines, to the meeting, approaching it from the south, and on reaching a line about six or eight feet south of the wagon, from which the crowd was being addressed, commanded its imme diate dispersion. Directly after this command was given, a dynamite bomb was thrown, which exploded among the policemen, resulting in the killing of several of them, among whom was Mathias J. Degan.
