The opportunity for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of disorders of the central nervous system has been immeasurably enhanced by the advent of CT scanning. CT scans have also made it possible for physicians to explain to patients and their families in a much more graphic and comprehensible manner many of the neurologic problems formerly only evident as a motor or behavior disorder or finally visualized at surgery or necropsy. The display of the transverse computed image has become standardized with the patient supine (face up). The visualized section is frequently shown as if viewed from the inferior surface, i.e., with left and right reversed. Although there are many excellent anatomic and radiologic atlases available to demonstrate the human central nervous system, the adoption of the supine orientation in CT calls for the presentation of normal structure in a comparable perspective. It has been our purpose in preparing this atlas to photograph the anatomy of the head and spine in a format commonly used in CT scanning for optimal visualization of the brainstem and spinal cord.
