Dept. of English and the Library of the University of Sydney, [Sydney], first edition, 1980. Printed wrappers, 8vo, 24 cm,. ix, 340 pp. From the introduction : "The collection comprises 1597 titles of fiction published in more than one volume between 1800 and 1900, in their first English edition (there are a very few titles, which are noted, not in the first edition). While the number of volumes ranges from two to five, most titles appeared in three volumes, and hence the term "three-decker". Some major authors are represented in the collection, but not others: Scott but not Jane Austen; neither Thackeray nor Dickens; George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell but none of the Brontes; Trollope and Meredith but not Hardy. The bulk of the collection, however, consists of work by minor and lesser-known authors. Such terms are difficult to define, but as an indication, only one in four of the authors represented in the collection figures in the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature 1800-1900 (ed. George Watson, 1969), and about the same proportion appears in Michael Sadleir's XIX Century Fiction (2 vols., 1951). Wrappers sunned, otherwise Good.
