Served as a young man in the Zulu War of 1879, and was Staff Officer to Commandant Lonsdale of the 3rd Regiment, Natal Native Contingent. He kept a journal in which he recorded his experiences and original observations. In his journal Harford, who was with Lord Chelmsford's Column, tells of the initial skirmishes of the war and of the disaster at Isandhlwana and the defence of Rorke's Drift. He describes the recovery at Fugitives' Drift of the Queen's Colour of the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment, claiming that he was personally responsible for finding the standard. Later, on resuming the Adjutancy of his own regiment, the 99th, he took part in the hunt for the Zulu king, Cetshwayo. ; 0869852736 .
