Accustomed as we are to thinking of life processes in terms of organic molecules, we should not forget that inorganic entities, particularly transition metal ions, are also integrally involved. Recent developments in biology and spectroscopic techniques have revolutionized our knowledge of the biological function of transition metal ions involved in microbial metabolism.
