As a journalist in the thirties, Aidan Crawley made an epic tour of the world, spending a day pig-sticking in India, flying through the Yangtze Gorges in an amphibious aircraft and witnessing at first hand the rule of the War Lords in China. He has been a dairy farmer, an RAF pilot, escaped from a German prison camp and made numerous film documentaries, including one of the Bedouin crossing the River Jordan. Entering politics after the war, he was a junior minister in Attlee's government; later, in the sixties, he rejoined the House, this time as an MP for the Conservative Party. Aidan Crawley has had a long and distinguished career in television, starting as a pioneer commentator for the BBC. He gives a fascinating account of the enormous changes the world was seeing in the fifties and sixties, particularly the development of the newly independent Commonwealth countries, which he examined in numerous documentary programmes. Founder editor of ITN and first chairman of London Weekend Television, he writes with great candour about the problems those companies faced in their early days.
