This is an exciting historical novel set around the exploits of Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), a United States naval officer and commodore notable for his many naval victories in the early 19th century. It is 1815, and he is running the blockade that the British have maintained on the eastern seaboard of America. But the US Frigate 'President' is a ship of ill omen to him, built parsimoniously of fir and which, the previous night, has been run aground and crippled by an incompetent pilot. The book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean although it may have been destined for some type of library as there are traces of a removed label on the top edge of the front free endpaper and 'F/I' has been written on ther copyright page. There are no other such marks or library indications. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with rubbing to the edges. The spine ends and corners are bumped and nicked with some small pieces missing from the spine ends. The spine is faded as well as a little part of the front of the wrapper. There are a few small tears on the edges of up to about 1/2" and some of these have been repaired on the reverse with tape. The dustwrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
