To control infectious disease, the medical community relies upon three approaches of prevention - active or passive immunization, disruption of transmission via improvements in sanitation and nutrition, and treatment with antimicrobial agents. Treatment of infectious diseases in the developing regions is hampered by the comparative high cost of medical care and a lack of health care infrastructure, by increasing reliance upon immunization as the primary means of controling infectious disease. The same conclusion also applies to developed areas of the world. Although the burden due to infectious disease is small compared to underdeveloped areas advances in care for critically ill patients, alongside complicated surgical procedures, and the expanded use of immunosuppressive therapy in treatment of cancer have led to a rise in hospital-associated infections. However, mass immunization campaigns at national levels have had a dramatic impact upon certain diseases, especially those where man is the only host. The growth of new infections such as HIV challenge modern advances. This book illustrates that the fields of vaccines and immunotherapy are far from static. Technological advances in molecular genetics, biochemistry, and cell biology have led to a burst of activity over the past decade. It provides a concise overview of the field concerning vaccines currently in use and those under development. Hardcover, Label: Pergamon Press, Pergamon Press, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 1991, Studio: Pergamon Press, Verkaufsrang: 11340154.
