He examines the organization of the Royal Commission on Poor Laws between 1832-34; and the political dealings involved in drafting the legislation and carrying it through Parliament. His analysis of the Poor Law Commission set up to supervise the administration of the new act pays p articular attention to the Commission's relations with local grandees in the establishment of poor law unions and boards of guardians, as well as the formulation of relief policies. Finally, Dr Brundage examines in detail local implementation of the act, focusing on the little-studied areas of East Anglia and the East Midlands, as well as Northern England and London. Throughout, Dr Brundage emphasizes the continuing power of the landowning classes, and their crucial influence on the act and its implementation.
