UK: HUTCHINSON OF LONDON, 1967. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. The Scottish short stories have been out of print practically since Mitchell's death in 1935. All five were included in Scottish Scene, that remarkable miscellany written jointly by Lewis Grassic Gibbon and Hugh MacDiarmid and dedicated to their friend Helen B. Cruickshank. Three of the stories Clay, Smeddum, and Greenden had been published previously in the Scots Magazine, and Clay and Smeddum have been included in some post-war anthologies. All five are examples of the writer at his best. The quality of Clay has been mentioned in the introduction, and Smeddum and Sim are not far behind. Meg Menzies of Tocherty who provides a living definition of smeddum, is a character from the same mould as Ma Cleghorn of Grey Granite, while the study of Sim with its subtle understanding of the ploughman's mind is reminiscent of other Segget dwellers in Cloud Howe. Rob Gait of Clay is of course a 'blood relative' of Sunset Song's Long Rob of the Mill, both deriving from a living source in the person of Mitchell's father-in-law Rob Middle- ton. Greenden holds something of Greek tragedy in its development, and at times recalls the mood of The House with the Green Shutters. Forsaken with its Communist theme is more of a curiosity than the others, hovering uneasily at times between the Mitchell of Calends of Cairo and the Gibbon of Grey Granite. The remaining impression of the stories is the mood invoked by the poetic realism, distinctive local flavour in language and humour, and power of dramatic writing. Always the background of the Mearns is vivid and authentic, while the blending of dialogue with narration to form a satisfying unity is a notable technical achievement.
