To obtain a fundamental understanding of ductile fracture and ductility it is necessary that engineers and metallurgists work together closely. It is the interdisciplinary nature of ductile fracture that orifginally brought the authors together from their different backgrounds. Moreover, we did not allow the large distance between our respective Institutions to become an obstacle to the completion of the work. We decided to take a particularly unified approach to the subject rather than to produce just a "data bank". Specifically, we have concentrated a large portion of the book on submillimetre domains and their interactions. Thus void nucleation and growth and shear bands and their interactions often play a significant role in ductile fracture.
