This was the begin ning of a controversy which was as long continued and bitter as only an ecclesiastical quarrel of former days could be. The final result after numerous votes and counter votes, decisions and re-decisions, and frequent appeals to the power of the General Assembly, was the division of the town into four socie ties by the following act passed at the October session of 1736.
