Boudin and her cohorts were characterised as Weather Underground "Bonnies and Clydes." In the atmosphere of hysteria that followed, what came to be known as the Brink's robbery became politicised and the truth about what actually happened was obscured. The truth is now revealed by a veteran reporter who was in Nyack the day of the robbery and who covered the case from the beginning. The author draws on FBI reports, surveillance tapes, and interviews to explain how the terrorist Family responsible for the Brink's robbery was formed. He uses documents seized from radical couriers and safe houses to trace the history of the gang from holdup to holdup and to show what happened to make its last job go so disastrously awry. It is also a portrait of the life Kathy Boudin led underground. What emerges is a tale of violence and betrayal - a story of how two radical groups, organised to fight for revolutionary change, degenerated into a terrorist gang. What emerges as well is a tale of intrigue and suspense - a description of how the Family lasted 5yrs without being detected. The author goes on to reveal undisclosed facts about the robbery and the investigation that followed it, details of the participants' lives underground, their struggles with one another behind bars, and the secret negotiations that led Kathy Boudin to plead guilty to robbery and murder in the second degree. In recounting the events that led up to the October 1981 Brink's robbery, the book shows how a tiny group of upper-middle class white radicals guilt-tripped one another into taking up arms in support of the black liberation movement, and how when the time came to pull the trigger, they discovered that they lacked the nerve.
