79 mit vielen farb. Abb.; kart. Gutes Ex.; Einband gering berieben. - 50 full-colored Reproductions. - Once upon a time-in the year 1877, to be exact-a pioneer citrus grower by the name of William Wolfskill did a daring thing, something no one in California had ever risked doing before. He sent an entire carload of oranges to St. Louis. The fruit was carefully packed in wooden crates that were branded on the box-end, WOLFSKILL CALIFORNIA ORANGES. When the freight, dusty but still durable, arrived in St. Louis one month later, perhaps it was a gentle wind wafting the exotic citrus fragrance from the railroad yard to Main Street that caused the first stir among the spectators. The magic words were "oranges" and "California", the talisman a promise from the west that soon had the whole town talking... and railroad owners listening. The future possibilities were enormous, they had to admit, as they envisioned the start of a beautiful friendship between orange growers and the railroad. Surely, if oranges could make the trip from sunny Los Angeles to sweeten the lives of folks back East, why shouldn't folks from the East dream of traveling to that sweeter world at the other end of the railroad tracks? A great publicity campaign was launched through the pages of Sunset magazine, which the Southern Pacific happened to publish. Soon another Southern California publication, Land of Sunshine, joined in. Within their pages one could find the Riverside Chamber of Commerce soliciting new citizenry by-offering this bit of heaven on earth: "The great clouds of smoke that roll from the chimneys of factories in the Eastern cities may betoken prosperity, but the odor of orange blossoms in California tells of happiness and contentment.... There is a glamor and romance about the golden fruit which does not attach to its more prosaic companions of the orchard.... The very name of orange grove possesses a wonderful attraction." One common and effective slogan was: "Oranges for Health, California for Wealth." (S. 7) ISBN 0446871443 Versand D: 3,00 EUR Kalifornien, Wirtschaftsgeschichte, Amerika, Orangen, Plakatwerbung, Plakat, Bildende Kunst.
