Early settlement of the Auckland Province by immigration is studied in this informative history. The format divides the topic into four sections. The first examines the process prior to the establishment of British authority in 1840, the continuation, on a random basis, up to the 1860s, organised settlement and immigration was then introduced and the final section covers developments in the 20th century . Throughout this period momentous events took place, including the Land Wars, the Thames area gold rush and the rise of Auckland as NZ's premier city, economically, industrially and population wise. However, Housman's excellet treatment of his subject covers a vast area of the country extending from North Cape, to East Coast and the Waikato/Bay of Plenty/King Country, to the West Coast north of Taranaki. A worthy contribution to Auckland provincial history. First edition of 1971, 231 pages including refrences and index, 29 b/w illustrations, mainly photos/some art, maps on blue e/papers.
