At one time I paid about $300 to the city authorities, for which I got not one dollar advantage. This was paid when such taxes run higher and higher, year after year, till they were about eight times higher, on the same property, than formerly. You rent a house at $400 a year. The tax on this is about $100 yearly. In other words, one pays one-fourth his income in taxes. At the same time, he must keep up repairs, and suffer, perhaps, in collecting his rent.
