This ran be seen inthe jewelry worn, which, more than any other item of dress, was an expression of the wearer's individuality, style and taste. Theseillustrations, taken from a careful selection of six catalogues all dating from the turn of this century, show the change between two styles of dress, one rich and dignified, the other elegant but relaxed, that crossed all levels of society. The formal designs of the Victorian style include stars, crescents, crosses and rossettes decorated with diamonds and pearls. Jewels such as the regal dog-collar cannot have been comfortable to wear, but were very popular, especially with the elderly, to camouflage an aging neck. In complete contrast are the light, elegant jewels of the belle époque designed to come to life with the wearer's movements - long, decorated chains that swayed at the waist, aigrettes that quivered in the hair. The Victorian era was an age of novelty and during this period inexpensive, attractive, and individualistic jewelry was created. Manufacturers competed every season to produce unique pieces of jewelry that would appeal to the Victorian. The designs ranged from an expanding snake ring to a gold bracelet that concealed a pencil within a little scabbard. Peter Hinks' excellent introduction providcs an interesting insight into jewellers and their particular markets. Hinks highlights the most interesting jewels in each catalogue and, if necessary, describes their function. This superbly illustrated book - including 24 pages of full color - provides a fascinating study of Victorian jewelry, detailing the wide variety of pieces available a hundred years ago. This beautiful volume will appeal to the collector of antique jewelry and will serve as an excellent reference book for the historian and designer.
