Friedrich Gottlob Kayser was born in "Luther country" in northern Germany in 1800. At the age of 22 he decided on a missionary career, and when turned down by SAPAK on account of his inadequate education, he applied elsewhere. He was tested and finally accepted by the London Missionary Society in 1826. He and his wife, whom he had dutifully courted and married in London, arrived in Bethelsdorp in the last quarter of 1827 . He served his apprenticeship under John Brownlee at the Buffalo River from 1827 to 1832. The next six years were the most challenging of his career. he succeeded the Reads as the missionary to Maqoma, the most redoubtable of all of the chiefs descended from Rharhabe, Kayser's failure to "hold on to" Maqoma after 1838 was a source of bitter disappointment and frustrations for him.Limited edition numbered 448 of 500 copies. xxxix + 216 pags text with Frontispiece-, maps and supporting data. Odd spot. Very clean copy. Rhodes University-The Grahams Town Serie.
