the Galatians Group, Armadale, Victoria, 1994. First Edition. illustrated Card. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 250 g; X, 76 pages, in original illustrated paperback binding. Contributions include Prof Geoffrey Blainey, the Right Honourable Sir Harry Gibbs, Ted Milliken and the Rev Dr Max Champion. "The impetus for the conference was provided by a Covenanting Statement read at the 7th Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia on 10 July this year. While supporting the goodwill towards Aborigines and commitment to reconciliation expressed in the statement, members of the group were disturbed by the stone and substance. Of particular concern work: its failure to express the covenant within the framework of Christian unity; a dangerous separation of all Australians into "aboriginal" and "non-aboriginal" races; a tendency to treat Aborigines as a homogenous group; criticism of British settlement is an unmitigated disaster for Aborigines; a flawed analysis of history, especially the failure to recognise that settler societies bring up evil and benefits to native people, and the denigration of the work of missionaries; and a confused and dangerous appeal to gilt which does not distinguish between empathy, lame and responsibility."
