The Battle of Alamein was one of the greatest set-piece battles in World War II and the victory for the allied troops was the turning point in the fortunes of war. Within a year of the battle Mussolini had been toppled and the Anglo-American forces had established a firm presence in Italy. The battle was of particular interest as it was a "clean" war. Bitterly fought on both sides according to certain basic ideas of what those involved were not ashamed to call "chivalry", the duel between to remarkable leaders - Rommel and Montgomery - is at the heart of this book. Both had fought and been wounded in World War I, both were personally austere and both had remarkable presence and powers of leadership with their respective troops. Hardcover, Ausgabe: 1St Edition, Label: Viking, Viking, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 2002-09-26, Studio: Viking, Verkaufsrang: 3852348.

'Excellent ... a remarkable achievement and ought to be recognised as one of the most succesful histories of the Western Desert and North African fighting yet to have appeared' John Keegan, Daily Telegraph For the British, the battle fought at ElAlamein in October 1942 became the turning point of the Second World War. In this study of the desert war, John Bierman and Colin Smith show why it is remembered by its survivors as a 'war without hate'. Through extensive research the authors provide a compellingly fresh perspective on the see-saw campaign in which the two sides chased each other back and forth across the unforgiving North African landscape.

From the climactic battle of Alamein, where Allied forces handed the Nazis their first major defeat, to the remarkable story of László Almasy, who became the basis for the romantic English patient in Michael Ondaatje’s novel, the story of this crucial WWII campaign is panoramic in scope and peopled by some of the most famous figures in the war. Drawing extensively on primary documentary sources and interviews with surviving veterans, award-winning journalists John Bierman and Colin Smith present a superb account of this extraordinary episode, remembered as a "war without hate" for the willingness by both sides to adhere to accepted notions of "fair play" and the mutual respect and camaraderie that evolved between the combatants. This riveting account is military history at its best.
