8vo; original pale grey boards; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper map; pp. viii + (vi) + 225, incl. index; plates. Dustwrapper slightly edgeworn and creased, sunned on spine panel, with tape marks to lower flap and reverse side; penned accession code to front free endpaper and recto of frontis.; library hand-stamp to title page and final text page; slight scar to verso of half-title from removal of pocket; trace of foxing to endpapers. Good. "Kipling, Stanley, Gordon, Froude - their names were and still are household words. Poet, explorer, administrator, historian - to read the life story of any one of them is to apprehend that these thumbnail definitions will not suffice. Each man was a complex individual, with human failings but superhuman gifts. In these biographical essays, the author has placed the main emphasis on that portion of his life which the subject spent in South Africa. Collectively, the four accounts span a thirty-year period in South African history, from the mid-1870s to the middle of the first decade of this century. The subjects themselves have been chosen from a long list of eminent Victorians who came to South Africa, any one of whom might have been eligible for selection. These four, it was felt, represented various professional callings, yet had in common their dedication to the idea of Empire. Taken together, their visits make possible a more or less consecutive narration of some of the events which distinguished three hectic decades of South African history.".
