This is a collection of essays and creative pieces that explores the complexity of the literary relationship between Yoruba and English over time and across the variety of international contexts that is the heritage of the Yoruba diaspora. As the diverse contributions to this volume confirm, the consciousness of the other language is a fact of life for 'Yoruba' writers which inevitably bears on the 'what' as well as the 'how' of their writing, whether they work in Ibadan, Birmingham or Port-of-Spain. The critical contributions to the volume consider the work of many of the major literary fields in this field writing in English - Wole Soyinka, Niyi Osundare and Ben Okri - as well as discussing the work of less well established writers like Femi Oyebode, Funmilayo Fakunle and 'Sola Osofisan. Other essays focus on writers who use Yoruba as their primary medium of literary expression. Enriching the critical debate are several pieces of original poetry, fiction and drama by writers for whom these issues are far from academic! Some of these essays evolved from papers originally presented at a symposium held at the Centre of West African Studies, University of Birmingham.
