University of Wales Press, Cardiff, first edition, 1977. Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm,. [3], 146 pp, plates, maps. From the blurb: "Why did the late Thomas Jones, C.H., say that Gregynog was unique among Welsh houses, and that he knew of no parallel in England ? In a century when other country houses have been demolished or have decayed, Gregynog has by contrast waxed in influence. Such is the extraordinary story of this house. Its beginnings however are quite typical. Gregynog was built by an ancient Powys family, the Blayneys, and their estate grew in size and wealth in the Tudor and Stuart periods ..The fundamental change carne at the time of the first World War, with the purchase of the estate by the Davies family of Llandinam. The Misses Gwendoline and Margaret Davies turned Gregynog into an arts centre, then made it their home, set up a world-famous private printing press there, opened their doors to innumerable meetings and conferences for bodies to discuss the deepening economic and social problems of inter-war Wales, and made their home a centre for music-making under the baton of Sir Walford Davies. Gregynog thus bccame an integrai part of an extensive scheme of the Davies family to transform the public life of Wales. More was to come.In 1960 the house was offered by Miss Margaret Davies to the University of Wales as a conference centre for the University. After her death in 1963 the University turned the house into a residential centre for courses and conferences, re-established the press there, and formed plans for the future, which are discussed in this book. Slightly rubbed, otherwise near Very Good in slightly faded dustwrapper.
