All British armed services were involved in this desperate adventure. Included were a sizeable Royal Marines battalion and a sizable Royal Navy squadron of cruisers, destroyers and MTBs. The RAFwere to carry out heavy bombing and the SAS and other secret forces were to engage in clandestine operations. The raid was boldly mounted in September 1942 - but it failed with terrible losses. Making full use of both Allied and Axis documents, together with eyewitness accounts, this book provides a full account of this operation, and seeks to provide answers as to what went wrong and who was to blame.
